Detection of a High Brightness Temperature Radio Core in the Agn-driven Molecular Outflow Candidate Ngc 1266

چکیده
We present new high spatial resolution Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) HI absorption and Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) continuum observations of the Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN)driven molecular outflow candidate NGC 1266. Although other well-known systems with molecular outflows may be driven by star formation in a central molecular disk, the molecular mass outflow rate reported in Alatalo et al. (2011) in NGC 1266 of 13 M year−1 exceeds star formation rate estimates from a variety of tracers. This suggests that an additional energy source, such as an AGN, may play a significant role in powering the outflow. Our high spatial resolution HI absorption data reveal compact absorption against the radio continuum core co-located with the putative AGN, and the presence of a blueshifted spectral component re-affirms that gas is indeed flowing out of the system. Our VLBA observations at 1.65 GHz reveal one continuum source within the densest portion of the molecular gas, with a diameter d < 8 mas (1.2 pc), a radio power Prad = 1.48 × 10 W Hz−1, and a brightness temperature Tb > 1.5 × 10 K that is most consistent with an AGN origin. The radio continuum energetics implied by the compact VLBA source, as well as archival VLA continuum observations at lower spatial resolution, further support the possibility that the AGN in NGC 1266 could be driving the molecular outflow. These findings suggest that even low-level AGNs may be able to launch massive outflows in their host galaxies.

Agn Feedback and Gas Mixing in the Core of Ngc 4636
Chandra observations of NGC 4636 show disturbances in the galaxy X-ray halo, including arm-like high surface brightness features (tentatively identified as AGN driven shocks) and a possible cavity on the west side of the galaxy core. We present Chandra and XMM-Newton spectral maps of NGC 4636 which confirm the presence of the cavity and show it to be bounded by the arm features. The maps also r...

We present results from Chandra observations of the galaxy pair and associated galaxy group NGC 5098, and find evidence for both gas sloshing and AGN heating. The X-ray brightness images show diffuse emission with a spiral structure, centered on NGC 5098a, and a sharp edge in the diffuse emission surrounding much of the galaxy at about 30 kpc. The spiral structure in the X-ray surface brightnes...

We present Chandra ACIS-I and ACIS-S observations (∼200 ks in total) of the X-ray luminous elliptical galaxy NGC 4636, located in the outskirts of the Virgo cluster. A soft band (0.5-2 keV) image shows the presence of a bright core in the center surrounded by an extended X-ray corona and two pronounced quasi-symmetric, 8 kpc long, arm-like features. Each of this features defines the rim of an e...

We present broadband and narrowband Hubble Space Telescope images of the central region of the heavily disturbed Virgo cluster galaxy NGC 4438 (Arp120), whose nucleus has been described as a type 1 LINER or dwarf Seyfert. Narrowband Hα and [NII] HST images reveal striking bipolar shell features, 1 kpc in projected length from end-to-end, which are likely the result of an outflow from the nuclea...

We have analyzed new, archival and published high resolution radio and X-ray observations of a sample of composite LINER/H ii galaxies known to exhibit AGN-like properties. Five of the 16 AGN candidates have milliarcsecond-scale detections and are found to display a compact, flat spectrum, high brightness temperature radio core, four of which also exhibit extended radio emission. Five of the ei...
